“But one day the Angel of the Lord came and sat beneath the oak tree…Gideon had been threshing wheat by hand in the bottom of a grape press…for he was hiding from the Midianites” Judges 6:11 (Living Bible)

The children of Israel had been bullied by the Midianites for seven years. The Midianites were so cruel that the Israelis could not reside in their own houses anymore but had to live in caves and dens. Whenever they planted their seed, Midianite raiders came and plundered them just to bully them.

God decided to rescue the Israelis through the hand of Gideon but there was a problem: Gideon was too scared to lead the rescue mission. He gave flimsy excuses to God about his financial status and the status of his family in the societal hierarchy in Israel. God did not bulge. He asked God for all sorts of miracles. God obliged him. Gideon was still very scared and had doubts about himself. Then God told him, “If you are afraid, first go down to the camp alone …and listen to what they are saying down there” Judges 7:10-11 (Living Bible). And so it was that when Gideon got to the camp of the Midianites, the Midianites were actually afraid of him and were having nightmares about him. That boosted his morale and gave him the courage to act.

Friend, whatever it is you are afraid of is afraid of you. Never ever give in to fear. Fear will always try to haunt you but never get paralysed because of it. Do what you have to do even if it means doing it afraid. God will never fail you. Isaiah 35:4 says, “Say to them that are of a fearful heart, be strong…behold your God will come…He will come and save you.”
